The number of megapixels determines the resolution of the images captured with the main camera. A higher megapixel count means that the camera is capable of capturing more details. However, the megapixel count is not the only important element determining the quality of an image. AptX is a codec used for transmitting audio wirelessly with Bluetooth.
If you want a voice assistant that's easy to talk to, a Nest speaker will be better. And, of course, any smart home devices you already use should be factored into your decision. Smart displays pair the abilities of a smart speaker with a screen, which can be useful if you want to watch movies or pair with other smart devices, like an outdoor security camera.
Smart features
With the Echo Plus, you can start connecting Zigbee-compatible bulbs, switches, outlets, and other smart home products right out of the box without needing to invest in a dedicated smart home hub. Further to this, the Echo Plus is equipped with a built-in temperature sensor, which can be used in conjunction with other smart home devices. This is really a most important step to get all your smart-home devices controlled via Alexa voice assistant. Both the Echo and Echo Plus also support multi-room audio, so you can play one track in your kitchen while someone else listens to a different track in the living room.
Most recently, Google released the Nest Hub Max, putting Google Assistant in a 10-inch smart display. It's the first product to come out under the converged brand name of Google and smart home security brand Nest. As an example you can simple control the Philips Hue lights or a smart lock directly to the Echo Plus, without having to set up a bridge or third-party smart-home hub first. Ofcourse I can’t say that the new Echo Plus beats the Sonos One, however at this price point you get a decent smart speaker empowered by Alexa for your home entertainment needs.
Features
Google Assistant and Alexa face off on their respective midsized smart displays. Google now has its hands-free voice calling feature available in the UK. With this, you can make high-quality calls for free to local mobile phones and landlines. This could be a great thing for anyone with a mobile plan that doesn’t come with many voice minutes. And, if you set your caller ID in the Home app, calls go out as though you made them on your own mobile phone. Both devices let you create groups for streaming to multiple devices, which gives you multi-room audio, too.

The Echo Show 10 has a 10.1-inch touch screen with 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution. The Nest Hub Max has a comparable display that's just a fraction of an inch smaller , with the same resolution. The Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub are both much smaller, respectively featuring 5.5-inch, 960-by-480 and 7-inch, 1,024-by-600 screens.
Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen) Review
Recently Google launched a follow up to its smallest smart speaker; the Google Nest Mini comes with three speakers (that's one more than the original), and is made from recycled materials. Like the Echo Dot, the speaker is puck shaped, if a little more pebble-like with softer edges, and has a top side covered in a fabric speaker mesh. You can pick up the Google Home Mini in a range of colors, with four flashing LED lights illustrating when it's listening to your commands and showing the volume level. Alexa can change colored lights to a specific choice with integrated hub, however it can’s pick from a color wheel, or select a particular lighting scheme, as you can in the Philips Hue app. With the Echo Plus, you can control these lights to turn ON/OFF at a specified time using Alexa voice controls.
While these two devices share a lot in common, they also have significant differences in design, price, and capabilities. Here’s what you need to know about their similarities and differences. If you have a second speaker of the same type, you can pair them together to create a stereo sound setup. The choice really then comes down to the preference of ecosystem as opposed to the hardware.
Google Home vs Amazon Echo – Smart home
For example, its integration with the Nest Learning Thermostat lets you say “Hey Google, make it warmer” to raise the temperature. With Alexa, you need to say “Alexa, turn living room Nest to XX degrees,” and if you vary your language it simply won’t work. Both platforms let you deploy Routines so you can, for example, use one command to turn off all the lights and lower the thermostat. Then, there’s theGoogle Nest Mini (£50), which competes with the Echo Dot and is cheap enough to spread throughout your home.
And, when Alexa can’t do something, there’s an app store full of Skills that let you expand capabilities far beyond what Google Home can do. As said earlier the NEW Echo Plus features 3 inch woofer and 0.8 inch tweeter as compared to the 2.5 inch woofer and 0.6 inch tweeter in Echo. Echo Show devices use Alexa, while Google Nest products use Google Assistant. Both have seen some major upgrades over the years, but they're also still works in progress.
With Google Home Hub, you can make calls through Duo, a video calling and messaging app owned by Google. Because the Home Hub doesn’t have a camera, you can’t use it to have a true two-way video call, although Google notes that you can use the camera on your connected phone or tablet. If that’s the case, however, there’s no need to use the Home Hub at all. Alexa, on the other hand, relies on the installation of skills – individual, app-like sets of related voice commands focussing on certain topics or abilities. Handled and activated through the Alexa app on smartphones, these can range from getting information on local transport times, or to activating voice-controlled games. The ZigBee hub built right into the smart speaker allows you to connect and control hundreds of products without having to deal with a myriad of clunky apps or installing an extra hub somewhere.
Which one you decide to go with may well depend on which you personally prefer and what kind of products you're using than which is technically 'better'. If this describes you, your patience has rewarded you with the second generation Echo Plus. You're interested in upgrading your home with a ton of cool connected tech, but you've waited a few years just to let all the early bugs get ironed out. Now, it's 2018 and you're ready to start upgrading your house to smart home status. The new Echo Plus is shorter and more compact while still packing in the all-important Zigbee hub that makes it the best starting point for converting your house into a smart home.
Improved audio is nice, but ultimately, the point of a smart speaker is to make mundane tasks easier. Echo devices work with thousands of Alexa-compatible smart home devices including doorbells, lights, thermostats, and more. The big standout difference between the Echo Plus and other Echo devices is the built-in Zigbee hub.
