Given the time jump midway in season 1, it's unclear if we'll see younger versions of characters Rhaenyra and Alicent (and their actors) return in flashback sequences for season 2. However, there are a few faces who won't be back, such as Rhaenyra's second born Lucerys, who was killed by Aemond and his dragon Vhagar in the season 1 finale. No official reason was given, but it sounds like the rigors of the job — Sapochnik worked for three years on House of the Dragon just for Season 1 after directing some of Game of Thrones' most demanding episodes — became too much for Sapochnik. Ryan Condal will remain on board as the sole showrunner, while Sapochnik will remain as an executive producer. The battle divides the realm like no other conflict and has terrible long-lasting consequences for the realm and the Targaryen dynasty. Following the events of House of the Dragon Season 1 and the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the world of Westeros is heading for a full-on civil war for the Iron Throne, known by most as the "Dance of the Dragons." House of the Dragon Season 2 will bring back many key cast members from the first season - including one particularly unexpected return - along with some newcomers.
Season 2 will deliver more on that front, too, including a return to The Wall, which sees Rhaenyra's eldest son Jace travel to in order to rally the Starks – led by Lord Cregan during this Westerosi period – to fight for the Targaryens in the war to come. The conflict over who has claim to – and will eventually reign on – the Iron Throne burns bright as we head into House of the Dragon season 2, too. Perrette confirmed season 2 would be released in June a few weeks before its official launch date was announced. The popular, R-rated high fantasy series will roar back onto our screens in June – and, with the Dance of the Dragons set to begin when it returns, you need to decide if you'll be supporting Team Black (the Targaryens) or Team Green (the Hightowers). Another dragon makes an appearance at the end of the Greens' trailer, but it's a familiar face. Condal confirms this pale grey beast is Seasmoke, the dragon once rode by Ser Laenor Velaryon (John MacMillan), son of Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Rhaenyra's first husband, who was last spotted faking his death to live in the Free Cities with his lover. Seasmoke is "now aged since the last time that we saw him in the Stepstones," the showrunner says.

HBO has released two trailers for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff series that wrapped its first season way back in October 2022, with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen — fire in her eyes — making a decision to fight for the Iron Throne. The second season of the celebrated series was confirmed by its makers just five days after the premiere of the opening edition. Despite the quick renewal, the follow-up installment is set to be released a whole two years after its predecessors. Following several time jumps that saw characters age out of their actors, things should slow down as Season 2 focuses more on the Dance of the Dragons, otherwise known as the Targaryen civil war.
